Geography

Census Division No.10 is located in the Central Plains region of Manitoba and is immediately west of the City of Winnipeg (Manitoba's Capital). The four lane Trans-Canada Highway 1 and Provincial Trunk Highways 2 and 3 are the major east-west transportation routes through the area.

The scenic and rolling Assiniboine River forms the northern boundary of the Census Division, while the La Salle River, a tributary of the Red River, winds through the southeastern part of the region. The LaSalle River provides many picturesque riverfront properties and recreation opportunities.

The 1996 population of this Census Division was 8,905. The Census Division area is made up of the Rural Municipalities of Cartier, MacDonald, and St.Francois Xavier. Within each of these rural municipalities there are a number of unincorporated urban centres that function as service and retail centres to surrounding residents.


Economic Base

The economic base of the area is deeply based in agricultural production, primarily mixed grains and livestock, as well as, manufacturing. The Unincorporated Urban Centres in the area play an important role as service centres to local residents and the farming community. Tourism and recreation also play an important part of the economy due to the many attractions, events and activities occurring in the region.
