Geography

Welcome to the North East Area (Census Division No. 19).

Census Division No. 19 is located within the Northern region of Manitoba and is located approximately 200 kilometres northeast of the City of Winnipeg. The area is bordered by the Province of Ontario on the east, and Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg on the west side. Provincial Trunk Highways 6 serves as major major north-south routes on the east half of the region.

The 1996 population of this Census Division was 14,725.

The Economic Base for this region includes fishing, forestry, trapping, mining and wild rice. Tourism and the local services also provide income to the community. Substantial forest harvesting is done in the area, with the wood being delivered to the Pine Falls Paper Company Ltd. in Pine Falls. Trapping is largely confined to registered traplines.
