The R.M. of Piney consists of 12 communities with a total population of about 1,600 people. The people in these friendly communities mostly speak English as a first language. However, French, German, Polish, and Ukrainian are also spoken here.

The principal industries in the area are agriculture, forestry and tourism. This corner of Manitoba has many natural resources and large tracts of undeveloped land. Major Attractions
The Sandilands Provincial Forest is a rich mix of hardwoods and majestic pine. The high sand ridges of the Sandilands area, known as Bedford Hills and Cypress Mountains, are the second highest points of elevation in Manitoba.
The R.M. of Piney is home to Whitemouth Lake where trophy size northern pike and Master Angler size walleye are so very commonly caught in these waters. A short 20 minutes drive from any community in the R.M. will also place you on Lake of the Woods, the premier walleye lake in the world. Moose Lake offers fishing and an excellent place to camp and enjoy several water sports such as water skiing, fishing etc.
As well, a variety of animals make their home in the area. White tailed deer, snowshoe hares, black bears, wolves, coyotes, fishers, and lynx all roam this forest haven.
The Wampum forest is indeed a rarity. Preserved, it is only one of two places in Manitoba that the Red Pine grow and reforest themselves naturally. On foot, explore where flora and fauna co-exist in perfect harmony. Famous for its grand blueberry crops, the wild fruit in the Cat Hills is featured each year at the Piney Blueberry Festival. Spur Woods Wildlife Management Area is home to several species of birds and some excellent varieties of rare flora and fauna. Several species of owls also make thier home here.
While many people come to Moose Lake Provincial Park for the fishing, Moose Lake is a great place to bring the family even if fishing is not on the agenda. Get away from the crowded provincial parks and enjoy Manitoba's beauty in its simplest form.

Woodridge boasts a beautiful paved volleyball/basketball court, Vassar has an outdoor - solar heated pool and 18 hole mini - golf course, South Junction has paved tennis court, Piney has an indoor curling rink and Sprague has a large arena for your winter skating.
Each community has grounds that play hosts every year to their community"s main event and are also available for rental for a private or public function.
