The Rural Municipality of Dufferin is located in the heart of Pembina Valley in southern Manitoba. Nine and one half townships of prime agricultural land make the municipality ideal for agricultural diversification, research and economic progress.
The municipality was incorporated in 1880 and has a population of approximately 2200 residents. Dufferin is characterized by three unique geographical features: the rolling hills to its west, the plain stretching to the easternmost limits of the municipality, and the Boyne River that winds almost due east through the heart of municipality. Located in the centre of Dufferin, is the Town of Carman with a population of 2880. Carman is a very progressive town with a thriving and growing economy. Dufferin is accessible by major provincial highways from all four directions. The railway provides and extra transportation link for the municipality. The City of Winnipeg is only 80 kilometres northeast of Dufferin and Carman.
Economic Base
Dufferin's primary industry is agriculture.
Diversification is a key factor in agriculture. The rich soils in the municipality makes it possible for farmers in this area to grow all different types of crops such as bean, peas, corn, cereal grains, oilseeds, potatoes, and sunflowers. For this reason, several agricultural research stations have located in the region including the University of Manitoba's research station. Cattle and hog operations, including many farm-related businesses, are also an important part of Dufferin's economy. The municipality has acquired a 53-acre parcel of land, which is available for industrial development. A rural water line distribution system serves the municipality. A 30-acre parcel of land just outside of Carman has been developed for residential development.
Major Attractions
A wide range of recreational activities and facilities abound in the R.M. of Dufferin. The Town of Carman and the Rural Municipality of Dufferin have a beautiful 18-hole golf course, a curling club facility, and an arena for hockey and ringette. Baseball diamonds, a bowling alley, an outdoor swimming pool, and cross-country and down-hill ski trails are all found in the R.M. of Dufferin. Good fishing and great camping are to be found in the nearby beautiful Stephenfield Provincial Park.
