The Rural Municipality of Argyle is located in south western Manitoba, almost equal distance from Brandon and Portage la Prairie. It lies adjacent to the R.M. of Lorne to the east, the R.M. of Strathcona to the west, the R.M. of South Cypress to the north, and the R.M.'s of Roblin and Louise to the south. The municipality is comprised of 10 separate townships covering an area of approximately 768 square kilometres. The municipality's largest centre is the community of Baldur. Other communities include Glenora, Dry River, and Greenway. As of the 1996 census, the municipality listed its total population at 1220. A portion of Rock Lake lies at the extreme south end of the municipality, which is also dotted with other small lakes and tributaries. Access to the municipality is along Provincial Trunk Highway 23 which runs east and west, and PTH 5, which runs north and south. A number of other access roads crisscross the municipality, including Highways 342 and 253.
History
European settlement in the municipality began in the 1870's, although the municipality was not incorporated until 1882. Previously, the region had been well known to nomadic groups hunting bison for some 3,500 years. The area around Rock Lake meanwhile, has a history as old as any part of Manitoba. Ancient dwellers lived along the shores of the lake, which has remained a popular spot for camping and water sports, up to the present. With the construction of the Canadian Northern Pacific Railroad, came the establishment of Baldur in 1890 and Greenway in 1899. Settlement began around a new flour mill in Glenora as early as 1882, although the town was not to be incorporated until 1904.
Economic Base
Argyle's main industry remains agriculture. Along with a diverse range of cereal crops are livestock operations, including hogs and cattle.
