Geography

The Rural Municipality of Cameron is located in southwestern Manitoba. Cameron is nestled between the municipalities of Albert to the west, Brenda and Winchester to the south, Whitewater to the east and Sifton and Glenwood to the north. As of the 1996 census, the municipality recorded a population of 537. The municipality surrounds the Town of Hartney, which boasts 462 residents. Other communities within the municipality include Lauder, Argue, Underhill and Grande Clairiere. Provincial Trunk Highways 23 and 21 provide access into the Rural Municipality of Hartney.


History

The municipality was incorporated in 1897. The Town of Hartney had its beginnings in 1882 when local farmer James Hartney built a post office, store and blacksmith shop. These amenities helped attract early settlers into the area.
