Geography

The Rural Municipality of Whitewater is located in picturesque southwestern Manitoba, and is only 48 kilometres south of the city of Brandon. Whitewater is also located only 50 kilometres north of the U.S.A. border crossing at Boissevain. The municipality is easily accessible by Provincial Trunk Highways 10, 22 and 23. Provincial Roads 347, 448, and 444 also service the municipality. Situated in the heart of the southwest corner of the province, Whitewater's communities of Elgin, Minto and Fairfax have much to offer!


Economic Base

Agriculture is a strong part of Whitewater's economy. This is evident in the presence of several agriculturally related companies, such as Prairie Gold Fertilizer, Fraser Seeds Ltd., Southern Seeds, and Double Diamond Farm Supply. The Ag-Quest Agricultural Research Facility in Minto, is one of the most prominent employers in the region employing approximately 20 residents.

The municipality boasts a good variety of homes available for purchase or rent. The two communities of Minto and Elgin also provide a wide range of basic necessities and conveniences. Minto boasts a Credit Union, community market, elementary school, seniors home and many recreational facilities. The West Elgin Mall in Elgin provides many services such as a restaurant, postal outlet and grocery store.


Major Attractions

The Whitewater Recreational Park has much to offer its visitors! Located just 2 kilometres east of the community of Elgin, the park boasts many attractions such as a well-serviced quiet campground, a 9-hole golf course, and a well-maintained beach with serviced washroom facilities. The park also boasts a bird sanctuary that is home to a number of exotic birds and animals.

The Elgin and District Historical Museum provides visitors with a unique glimpse of the history of Elgin and of the Rural Municipality of Whitewater. The museum is open during the summer in July and August.


Facilities - Recreation, Parks, Culture

The residents of Whitewater are active with many diverse opportunities for sports and recreation. The Elgin and Minto annual bonspiels is sure to bring out all curling fans. The Minto Sports Day during the summer, and Canada Day celebrations in Elgin are also popular events. Both community halls in Minto and Elgin are always alive with many various dances, social events and trade shows throughout the year.
