The Rural Municipality of Sifton is ideally located along the Trans-Canada Highway. Sifton is approximately 50 kilometres west of Brandon, and 250 kilometres west of Winnipeg, the Provincial Capital. Sifton is also 100 kilometres from the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border and 100 kilometres north of the Canada-United States Border. The municipality surrounds the Town of Oak Lake which is a local service centre for trade.
History
In the early 1800's, with the fur-trade in full swing, the Sifton area was the location of several trading posts and forts. Oak Lake was a favourite stopping place for freight cars and travelers. The large oak trees that lined the shores were perfect for repairs to worn down wagons and carts, and a needed rest for weary travelers.
The Canadian Pacific Railway set about construction of the railroad from coast to coast in the 1870's. In 1881, track was built through the area, and arriving trains brought more and more settlers to Sifton. Legend says that the municipality adopted its name in honour of the first Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for the Brandon Region, Mr. John Sifton.
The municipality was incorporated in 1884, and held its first elections that same year. Through the years, the Town of Oak Lake grew to be a major centre in the local area. Oak Lake filed for incorporation in 1907, and soon after became a self-governed community.
Economic Base
Agriculture plays a major role in the economy of Sifton and much of the surrounding area. The farming community is comprised of mainly grain, mixed grain and oilseed operations. A small number of other operations in the immediate area specialize solely in livestock production. Several large livestock operations have been constructed in the area, and a major P.M.U. operation has been set up to supply a local processor. The community also has a seed grower and a seed cleaning plant.
The small business sector in the Town of Oak Lake provides many necessary goods and services to meet the needs of residents in the surrounding community.
Tourism and recreation also boost the municipality's economy. Oak Lake and the campgrounds offer many opportunities for fun and relaxation and also attract visitors from across the province each year.
