Geography

The Village of Elkhorn lies just east of the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border along the Trans Canada Highway. The community serves as a local service centre for the surrounding agricultural area, and is the last major community westbound on the Trans Canada Highway before Saskatchewan. The community has a strong recreational spirit that boasts ice skating, curling rinks, many baseball diamonds, and a nine-hole golf course. Elkhorn is also well represented by a strong minor sports program.

History

Elkhorn owes its roots the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1882, track was laid through what was then known as Flatcreek. The name Elkhorn was adopted when one of the CPR crewmembers found a very large Elk horn in the area.

The community has grown over the years and lies on the flat, agricultural area of the southern Manitoba. Gently rolling hills and waving fields stretch for kilometres around Elkhorn and extend almost as far as the eye can see.

Economic Base

Due to its location in western Manitoba, Elkhorn's local economy is deeply driven by its role as a farm service centre. Much of the area around Elkhorn is involved in mixed farming, with a large volume of cattle and hog production.

Elkhorn's close proximity to Canada's Trans Canada Highway and the rail line, makes it an ideal place to locate a business.

The construction industry is also strong in Elkhorn with a number of road construction firms operating in town. The town also boasts a small industry based on oil exploration and extraction.

Major Attractions

The jewel in the Village of Elkhorn is the Manitoba Antique Automobile Museum. Founded in 1965, the museum is currently home to an extensive collection of automobiles, agricultural machinery, Native artifacts and pioneer displays. The museum is one of the finest in Canada, with the collection of automobiles rivaling those of much larger centres. The museum attracts visitors from around the world.

Elkhorn is also host to a number of sporting and recreational events throughout the year, including hockey and golf tournaments, Pioneer Day celebrations, and an agricultural fair.

Other Information

Elkhorn is a vibrant and active community in south western Manitoba. Many small local businesses thrive in the area with others constantly expanding and modernizing. The village always welcomes new residents and businesses.
