Geography

The geography of the Rural Municipality of Oakland is mainly flat prairies, with some areas of rolling hills that have become small acreage holdings. The Souris River meanders through the southeastern corner of the municipality.

Oakland is mostly a farming community with areas of smaller acreage found throughout the municipality. Provincial Trunk Highways 2 and 10 run through the municipality with large numbers of commuters travelling to the City of Brandon for business.

The community of Nesbitt is the largest community in Oakland, with Rounthwaite, Carroll and Banting being other significant communities. The Town of Wawanesa is also found in Oakland, and is located just off of Provincial Trunk Highway 2.

History

Pioneers have settled the area as early as 1880. The land for the Town of Nesbitt was purchased as an 18.3-acre parcel in 1888. The Canadian Pacific Rail line to Nesbitt was completed in 1891, with the General Store, the Post Office and Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, which opened in 1892. The R.M. of Oakland was officially incorporated in 1883.

Economic Base

Oakland's economy revolves around agriculture. The majority of Oakland's residents are employed directly in farming, or in farm related businesses. Canola, wheat and barley are among some of the major crops grown in the area, which supports the major industries for AgriCore, Con Agra and numerous seed cleaning plants found throughout the municipality.

Major Attractions

The communities of Nesbitt and Carroll both boast their own Community clubs. These clubs form an important link in the social, recreational and cultural life of Oakland's residents.
