Geography

The R.M. of Elton is situated to the north of the Trans-Canada Highway and Manitoba's second largest city, Brandon. Elton was incorporated in 1883 with its first elected officials taking office in 1884.

History

The R.M. was settled between 1879 to 1900, with large numbers of pioneers and homesteaders coming from eastern Canada, Ukraine, Poland and Germany. In 1936, Elton built its first municipal office in the community of Forrest. In addition, the R.M. is home to residents in the communities of Justice and Douglas.

Elton has been home to families for generations with many of the resident families being descendants of original pioneers and owners of Century farms.

Economic Base

Elton has had a varied history of commerce over the years, but has always been predominately an agricultural area. The R.M. of Elton today is a mixture of agricultural and residential areas, with the largest residential component located near the City of Brandon to the south.
