Found on the western shore of Lake Manitoba, the Rural Municipality of Lakeview is situated between the beautiful Lake Manitoba shoreline and the Big Grass Marsh. Bordered on its east by the lake, the municipality also shares borders with the R.M.s' of Westbourne, Alonsa and Glenella. Lakeview's largest centre is the Town of Langruth, with the communities of Lakeland and Embury being other significant communities in the municipality. The municipality is easily accessed along Provincial Trunk Highway 50, and boasts a healthy population of approximately 407 residents.
History
The Rural Municipality of Lakeview was incorporated in 1920, however, its history dates back long before this. Immigration into the region increased dramatically in the latter half of the 1800's.
Icelanders were among the first European immigrants to settle the land in hopes of finding a better life in Manitoba. In 1907, Mr.Langdon and Mr.Ruth, two of the area's first settlers, came from Ontario with a carpenter in tow. The two men developed a town to accommodate new immigrants into the area. After selecting a site, a hotel and store were built, and the Town of Langruth was born.
Economic Base
The R.M.'s history and development have been shaped, to a large extent, by its unique location between lake and marsh. The winter commercial fishing industry, the huge number of waterfowl, the abundant haylands and a primarily north to south road and rail system (now abandoned), have all formed prominent ties in Lakview's rich history and economic situation. The majority of services are found in Langruth.
