Geography

The Rural Municipality of Strathclair incorporates an area of 208 square miles in western Manitoba, and has a population of approximately 1026 residents. The municipality is accessed by Provincial Trunk Highways 16 (the Yellowhead Route) and 45, and by Provincial Road 354. The CP rail line passes through the southern part of the municipality, providing rail freight and grain hauling services. Strathclair is a short drive from the beautiful Riding Mountain National Park. Strathclair is located just 94 kilometres northwest of Manitoba's second largest city, Brandon. The communities of Strathclair, Elphinstone, Menzie, Glenforsa, Ipswich and Glossop, are the major centres in the community.

History

Attracted by the bountiful hunting and fishing, the Cree-Saulteaux natives were the first inhabitants to the region. The first European settlers were mainly of Scottish descent. The mid 1800's saw the population of the region increase with the building of churches, a post office, general store and sawmill. The first council meeting for the Rural Municipality of Strathclair occurred on January 8th, 1884.

Economic Base

Grain production, mixed farming, PMU operations, and other agri-businesses provide the majority of Strathclair's economic base. The municipal council of Strathclair is actively involved in the development of a new commercial/industrial park in the municipality along the Yellowhead Route. Strathclair also has the advantage of offering many different lot sizes at very reasonable prices.

Major Attractions

Camping, swimming and water-skiing can be enjoyed just 8 kilometres away from Strathclair, at Carlton Beach on Salt Lake. Thomas Lake near Elphinstone, provides good camping, water and fishing activities. With its close proximity to Riding Mountain National Park and the small lakes in the northern portion of the municipality, one can experience great fishing.

The Valley Trail, a groomed trail for hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing is situated in the Little Saskatchewan River Valley. The trail is accessed just off Provincial Road 354.
