Geography

McCreary, the "Ski Capital" of Manitoba, welcomes you!

The Rural Municipality of McCreary is found just east of scenic, wooded Riding Mountain National Park. The bustling city life of the Province's capital, Winnipeg, is a three hours drive away by an excellent highway network. The R.M.'s largest centre is the Village of McCreary, which features picturesque tree lined neighborhood streets. The Municipality boasts unpolluted air, an abundance of excellent drinking water, and top grade recreation facilities. McCreary is especially known for excellent skiing, snowmobiling, swimming facilities and golf courses. The municipality also boasts good connections to the CN rail system, as well as, provincial highways. McCreary is easily reached along Provincial Trunk Highway 5, or 19. As with it's location, the Village of McCreary offers a great cultural diversity of facilities through it's active library and arts council.


History

Incorporated in 1909, the Rural Municipality of McCreary shares a privileged common boundary with the Riding Mountain National Park on its west. The municipality spans 24 kilometres from north to south, and covers a total area of 515 square kilometres. The Village of McCreary, was the main settlement through which the CN main rail line passed in 1897. The village itself was incorporated in 1964, and forms the business, social and cultural heart of the municipality.


Economic Base

With its diverse geography, agriculture related to the rich soils and good climate, is the principal economic activity in McCreary. The R.M. features mixed grain and specialized crop farming, and also a hefty grown portion of beef production and related activities on its eastern plains. The municipality boasts purebred cattle and hogs destined for international markets. As well as its strong economy, McCreary offers excellent educational facilities and medical services. The village itself meets the needs of those from the young to the elderly, with a nursery and active seniors centre and programming. New residents will find the beautiful region of McCreary and the quality of life in the municipality impossible to resist. McCreary offers its residents favorable property tax rates and a high degree of police and fire protection. This makes McCreary a safe and healthy place to live.


Major Attractions

The adjacent Riding Mountain National Park provides excellent camping, boating, fishing, swimming and picnic sites just minutes away! The World Class Tourist Resort of Wasagaming is also just 50 kilometres away on Highway 19, and is definitely worth the drive.

The nearby Mount Agassiz Ski Resort, considered the best skiing between the Rockies and Thunder Bay, is located in the heart of Riding Mountain National Park. The Resort is only 16 kilometres west of the Village of McCreary, and with its excellent facilities boasts holding the 1979 Canada Winter Games.


Facilities - Recreation, Parks, Culture

The warm people of McCreary are busy with their annual Fair, Horse Show, Race Meet and Craft Fair. Always popular are the Festival of the Arts, and several art shows that happen throughout the year in the village.
