Geography

The Town of Ste.Rose du Lac is situated between the Lake Manitoba Narrows and Riding Mountain National Park. The area surrounding Ste.Rose du Lac is a gently rolling landscape and blanketed with woodland areas of brush and small trees. The scenery of the area is both rustic and beautiful.


History

Ste.Rose du Lac is a progressive community of approximately one thousand people. The town is situated in Manitoba's beautiful Parkland Region. Ste. Rose du Lac is just over 300 kilometres from Winnipeg. Ste. Rose du Lac has a primary trading area of 5000 people, with an overall trading area of 16,000 people. The community serves as a regional centre for health and agricultural services. Ste.Rose du Lac is also an important shopping and commerce centre for the surrounding communities.

The area has a rich French Canadian heritage. Many residents of Ste.Rose du Lac are fluent in both official languages.


Economic Base

The Ste. Rose du Lac area is ideally suited for cattle production. The town and surrounding area is one of the largest feeder cattle centres in Manitoba. Cattle ranching is the major source of income for local residents. Ste. Rose du Lac produces almost ten percent of the province's beef cattle, and has been declared the "Cattle Capital of Manitoba". Weekly cattle sales and auctions attract buyers from across Manitoba and Canada.

The delivery of health and medical services has also become an important economic activity for the town. Ste. Rose du Lac is home to the third largest health care facility in the Parkland Region. The centre houses a 68 bed hospital and a 65 bed personal care home. It also employs dozens of local residents. The community also houses many other types of health services and medical practitioners.

Ste. Rose du Lac is quickly developing into a regional centre for outlying agricultural areas and the neighbouring Aboriginal and Metis communities. A full range of business and professional services are located in the Town of Ste. Rose du Lac.


Major Attractions

Tourism and recreation activities abound in the Ste. Rose du Lac area. Riding Mountain National Park, Clear Lake, Lake Dauphin, Waterhen Lake, the Lake Manitoba Narrows, Manipogo Beach, Rainbow Beach, Ochre beach and the Mount Agassiz Downhill Ski Facility are all located within a thirty minute drive from the community.

The Town of Ste.Rose du Lac has a community centre, skating rink and curling rink with four sheets of ice. Other facilities include a town park and three large baseball diamonds. A nine-hole golf course is also located just three kilometres from town.

The annual Hoof and Holler festivities are held during the October long weekend. This event features a cattle auction, indoor rodeo, a pancake breakfast, barbeques, a ranchers' banquet, dancing and numerous children's activities.

The festival offers fun for people of all ages. The festival is also a good opportunity to have fun with friends and neighbours.
