"Between Mountain and Lake" sums up the location of the Rural Municipality of Ochre River. With Dauphin Lake to its north, and the Riding Mountains in the south and much good prairie farmland in between, Ochre River is found in the beautiful Parkland region in Manitoba.
History
Ochre River takes its name from an ochre-coloured river that flows through on its way to Dauphin Lake. Makinak is said to mean "good trail", and refers to the trail over the Riding Mountains extending north to Dauphin Lake and through the Village of Makinak, which was used during pioneer times. The first settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800's. With the building of the railway, a great boost was given to the growth of both settlements.
Economic Base
The economic base of Ochre River is farming. Crops grown are wheat, barley and canola, with a few growers experimenting with specialty crops such as hemp. There are also many cattle and dairy farms in the area.
The present population of the municipality is 929, with over 150 residing in the Village of Ochre River. The population swells to 1500 during the summer beach months.
The Village of Ochre River is a thriving community that contains a hotel, beverage room, restaurant, general store, post office, library, community hall and seniors housing complex. The village also boasts an outstanding k-8 school. The municipality retains the services of welders, carpenters, a plumber, cabinetmaker, auctioneer, autobody, honey farms, U-pick berry farm, dj taped music service and hunting outfitters.
New families will find Ochre River irresistible due to its well-serviced and affordable housing stock. With an active senior's community, youth and 4-H groups, as well as, United and Baptist churches, Ochre River is a great place for families to move to.
The community of Makinak houses a Community Hall, Seniors Drop In Centre and Post Office.
Major Attractions
One of Ochre River's major attractions is Skane's crossing. Named after one of the earliest pioneers, Captain Skanes, the spot is a favorite summer hang out for many people. Skane's crossing is a shallow, shale crossing on the Ochre River, and a wonderful way to spend a hot summer's day. It is also a popular sledding site during the winter months.
Snake Hill, just southwest of Ochre River, is the winter home for thousands of garter snakes. May and September, the time for the bi-annual migrations, are the best times to visit Snake Hill.
The 5 lovely beaches of Dauphin, Ochre, Laguna, Crescent Cove and Oako, are also great places to visit while in Ochre River. The nearby Rainbow Beach Provincial Park provides excellent camping and walking trails, through this beautiful part of Manitoba. Ochre River also boasts a wonderful 18-hole golf course and great fishing on Lake Dauphin.
The Village of Ochre River has a fun 18 hole miniature golf course located on MacKenzie Ave. across from the general store.
Facilities - Recreation, Parks, Culture
On the last Wednesday in September, Ladies Night Out is held. This event allows home based business in Ochre River a chance to display their products. The annual Christmas Craft Sale in December keeps everyone busy.
Ochre River has an 18 hole Mini Golf Course situated right down town with picnic tables and benches set up for your relaxation and enjoyment.
The Canada Day Brunch held annually July 1st hosts a wonderful meal of pancakes, sausage, salads, fruits, vegetables, desserts and much more attracts people from near and far.
Groomed snowmobile trails and poker rallies keep the communities of Ochre River and Makinak busy. Also, do not miss the annual Fall Supper held at the Ochre River Community Hall every year in October. The hall hosts many other social activities and events throughout the year.
