The area around Gilbert Plains has some of the most fertile farmland in the province. The landscape is that of a gently rolling plain with many shallow valleys and depressions. Farming is the mainstay of the local economy with producers growing large amounts of cereal grain and oilseeds, as well as, some specialty crops and livestock operations. Agriculture is the main component of the local economy, and many businesses in town provide supplies and services to local farmers.
History
The Town of Gilbert Plains lies in the heart of Manitoba's Parkland Region, nestled between the Riding Mountains to the south, and the Duck Mountains to the north. The town is at the junction of Provincial Trunk Highway 5 and Provincial Road 274, and is 360 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, the provincial capital. Gilbert Plains is also 35 kilometres west of Dauphin, the region's largest centre.
Economic Base
A complementary blend of younger and older residents has resulted in a wide variety of services for everyone. Popular facilities that are the pride of the community include an active Senior's Drop In Centre, the Gilbert Plains arena complex, and the Gilbert Plains Centennial Park. The Arena Complex encloses four sheets of artificial curling ice along with a skating and hockey rink.
Major Attractions
The Gilbert Plains Centennial Park Campground and the beautiful 18-hole golf course are nestled in the well-treed and picturesque clearings along the banks of the Valley River. The campground is operated by the municipality and is fully serviced with electrical hook ups and shower facilities, a playground, a child's wading pool, and a kitchenette facility.
The 18-hole golf course has grass greens, while the long tree-lined fairways and natural obstacles provide a challenge for the duffer and the pro.
