Geography

The Village of Riverton is situated in the northern part of Manitoba's Interlake Region. Rich in fishing and Icelandic heritage, the community of almost 600 people lies just inland from Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba's largest body of water. Sitting along Provincial Trunk Highway 8 on the banks of the Icelandic River, Riverton is easily accessible by land and water.

History

Located in the midst of the Manitoba Lowlands, the area around Riverton is characterized by its geographic diversity. The village lies in a transition zone between two unique and different landscapes. Lush, rolling prairie to the south and west give way to the Great Plains of North America, while to the north and east, the land quickly becomes rocky and rugged as one enters the prominent Canadian Shield. Marshes in the area teem with birds and wildlife, hinting at the natural wonders of the area, while white-tail deer are a common sight. The call of the loon can often be heard echoing through the early morning mist. Formerly an aboriginal hunting ground, the permanent settlement at Riverton was first established by Icelandic settlers in 1876. In later years, settlers arrived from Ukrainian, German, Hungarian and Polish origins.

Economic Base

Riverton has always been a traditional village, with most residents having fishermen in their family trees. The Icelandic River offers convenient access to the community and a sheltered port for many of the boats in Lake Winnipeg's commercial fishing fleet. The economy of the village is further boosted by a number of industries that supply and support the fishing boats. Riverton is home to a company that builds some of the finest workboats in the country. Agriculture is also a large part of the economic scene. Flat land to the south is quite fertile for its northern location, and the climate-regulating effect of the lake helps to grow fine crops of cereal grains and oilseeds.

Riverton's unique location and status as a gateway to many northern communities and outposts make the village a transportation hub for Lake Winnipeg's Northern Basin. During the summer months, goods arrive and depart Riverton from southern points by land, air and water, destined for many isolated northern communities, outposts and lodges. A float plane base on the river is the only means in and out of many recreational lodges. During the winter, Riverton is the start of a network of winter roads that supply many communities with a year worth of supplies in a few short months. Riverton's location also makes it a starting point for many tourist destinations. Fishers and hunters from across North America, leave from Riverton for outdoor vacations and sporting adventures at dozens of remote lodges and outposts in Northern Manitoba. Number 8 highway through Riverton, guides hundreds of people north each year to enjoy the beauty of Hecla Island Provincial Park.
