Adventurers from eastern Canada, England and Europe first settled Benito around the turn of the century. With the arrival of the Canadian National Railway in 1905 came the establishment of a prosperous little community. The hamlet of Benito slowly grew and was incorporated as a village in 1941.
History
The Village of Benito is known as "the gateway to Swan Valley". The quaint village is nestled in the beautiful Swan River Valley and is 475 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. A quiet rural community of 460 residents, Benito welcomes visitors, new neighbors and relocating businesses with open arms.
The valley around Benito has been described as one of the most beautiful spots in Manitoba, and is a nature lover's paradise.
Economic Base
Benito and much of the surrounding area owe their economic livelihood to the agricultural and logging industries. Benito serves as an agricultural service center and a local trading hub with a market area of over 2500 people. In Benito, there is always room to grow, and new businesses are always welcome.
Major Attractions
Recreation contributes to the quality of life enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike. A recreation complex houses an indoor arena and curling rink with adjoining baseball diamonds and sports fields for summer sports.
Benito campground provides a park with camping and picnic facilities and a playground for young children.
Thunderhill, just west of the village and Madge Lake provide fantastic slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.
Snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing are also available in the immediate area.
Other Information
Benito is the hometown of the World Champion Curler Ed "The Wrench" Werenich. Many local residents still continue to enjoy this popular winter pass time.
Benito's business district contains a variety of retail shops and services to meet most daily needs.
A modern health facility was built in 1990, and is equipped to handle most medical problems.
