Geography

The Town of Snow Lake is a mining community of 1300 people. Snow Lake is situated mid-way between Thompson, Flin Flon and The Pas. Located along Provincial Road 392, the town is 685 kilometres north of Winnipeg, Manitoba's capital city.


History

Native peoples have inhabited the area around Snow Lake for many centuries. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were explorers, fur traders and prospectors hoping to find furs and precious metals in the north's bountiful wilderness.

The community's first true resident was Bill English and his wife Margaret. Bill moved his house from Herb Lake in 1947 to Snow Lake. He opened up its first general store soon after.

Discovery of a major ore deposit in the fifties saw immigration into Snow Lake increase quickly. Settlers came from across Canada to try their luck at prospecting or mining. After the rush was over, many residents left. A small permanent community however, remained in the town.


Economic Base

The Hudson's Bay Mining and Smelting facility is a prominent feature in the Town of Snow Lake. The mine employs a large number of residents from the town and its surrounding communities.

Many other Snow Lake residents are employed in other industries and services that relate directly to the operation of the mine.

Although mining has traditionally been the main component of the local economy, the Town of Snow Lake is quickly developing a strong tourist industry.

Located adjacent to the town itself, Snow Lake is characterised by excellent fishing opportunities and natural beauty that attracts tourists from all parts of North America.

The Town of Snow Lake maintains all the businesses and facilities needed for a wilderness vacation destination. These facilities include restaurants, hotel and motel accommodations and recreation facilities.


Major Attractions

The Town of Snow Lake is truly is an outdoor-lovers paradise.

Nature lovers will delight in the numerous species of birds, animals and vegatation found along the regions many area's hiking trails. Picking strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries or gooseberries are also a favourite summer past time.

History enthuisiasts can explore ancient Aboriginal Pictographs that are approximately 1500 years old.

Canoeing the Grass River Route will provide outdoor enthusiats with an insight into the life of the early voyageurs and fur traders. The river and nearby Snow Lake also provide many opportunities for spectacular fishing.

In the winter months, local hiking paths double as cross-country ski trails. Miles of frozen lakes and rivers in the area provide endless trails for snowmobile enthusiasts.

The Town of Snow Lake also is home to a hockey arena, curling rink, golf course and several other recreational facilities.

Visitors to the north cannot miss the north's beautiful sunsets. Silhouetted in the evening light, loons grace the quiet evening with their soulful calls on the waters around Snow Lake. The experience of the northern sunset is an experience few visitors ever forget.
