Pine Dock

Community Status

Pine Dock is located on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg in the Narrows region of the lake. About 16 kilometres south of Matheson Island, and historically known as Bullhead on navigation maps, the community is served by PR #234, which provides road linkage to Riverton, and then via PTH #8 to Winnipeg. Other nearby communities include Matheson Island, and on the east shore of the lake, Princess Harbour, Long Body Creek and Loon Straits.

Pine Dock was recognized by the department in 1972, and is currently represented by a mayor and council under The Northern Affairs Act.

Emergency Services

Fire
Fire fighting capability is based on a small "fast-attack" vehicle with limited water supply, hoses and equipment. Addition portable forestry-style equipment is available for grass and brush fires.

Police
Police response is from the RCMP detachment at Arborg, phone 376-5251, who have to drive some distance to the community.

Medical
Medical response is based on ambulance service from Riverton, about one hour away. The nearest hospitals are at Arborg and Gimli.

 
 
 
 
 
Community-Based Services

Hydro
Provided by Manitoba Hydro as land- line electric power. Residential rates are based on zone 3 levels:
Basic charge $ 13.65 /month
First 175 KWH 7.33 cents/KWH
Balance 5.16 cents/KWH

Telephone
Manitoba Telecom Services provides individual line service and digital switching with toll-free calling to Arborg, Riverton, Vidir, Hecla and Poplarfield. Call MTS toll-free at 225-5687.

Water
Water supply is based on a membrane water treatment plant supplied with well water. The water is treated, chlorinated and stored in a resevoir. Approximately 50% of the community is able to connect to the new system. Others may be connected to a specific well or lake intake. The balance of the community will be connected to the new system in 1998-2000.

 
 
 
 
Waste disposal
A solid-waste disposal site is near the community, along with a limited access pit for controlled liquid-wastes.
All sewage generated within the community is treated by the sewage batch reactor treatment plant (SBR). Approximately five residences are connected to the low-pressure collection system. The balance is collected by pumpout truck and hauled to the SBR for treatment.

Schools
Frontier School Division operates the Pine Dock School with two teaching staff and three support staff, phone 276-2177.

Accommodation
o Biscuit Harbour Resort provides accommodation and meals.

Transportation
o Both Riverton Transfer and Fisher Branch-Hodgson Transfer provide freight services to the community.
o A local taxi provides transportation from Matheson Island through to Riverton.
o Northway Aviation operate a private airstrip and sea plane base in the community. They provide charter service and scheduled daily service into Pine Dock from Winnipeg, Bloodvein, Berens River and Little Grand Rapids.

Economic Overview

The major economic activity in Pine Dock is based on commercial fishing, with some small income derived from trapping, pulpwood harvest and local services.

 
 
 
Fishers deliver their fish to the community fish station, unless fishing in an area of Lake Winnipeg closer to another fish station.

Pulpwood harvested from the area is shipped to Pine Falls Paper Co. Ltd at Pine Falls.

A community development corporation was formed some years ago to assist with economic growth and development.
