Province of Manitoba Profile:

Research & Development

A strong research and development community is essential to keeping our strategic sectors thriving. The Manitoba government works closely with industry and research institutions to enhance ongoing R&D. A 1994 study showed Manitoba has among the best R&D tax environments in Canada, whose overall R&D climate is better than any other G-7 industrialized country. Manitoba's record is bolstered by such measures as the 15 per cent provincial R&D tax credit.

R&D facilities are operated by agencies of both levels of government and by the universities (particularly the University of Manitoba). All have strong linkages to the private sector at all levels - from board representation to joint ventures and fee-for-service contracts. In addition, private engineering consulting firms, often with international ties, have the capabilities to perform both theoretical and practical analysis. Many medium-size companies, which include suppliers, have research and development capabilities offering the potential for joint venture R&D projects in a wide range of areas. In total, the facilities contribute to fostering a collegiate network of expertise which are linked through formal professional associations and informal groups.
